Along the Jurassic Coast

Chapmans Pool, on the Jurassic Coast, Isle of Purbeck

Chapmans Pool Camping, on the Jurassic Coast, Isle of Purbeck

To the west of Langton Matravers lies the lovely and picturesque cove called Chapman’s Pool. In the late nineteenth century it was home to a lifeboat station, built in 1867 in an effort to lower the number of lives lost at sea nearby. However it was short-lived due to the high expense required to keep it running and was subsequently closed in 1880. The building still exists to this day and is now commonly used as a fishing hut. As part of the Jurassic Coast, Chapman’s Pool is a popular spot for those interested in finding fossils, with many being discovered on a regular basis. Only a short 12 minute drive from the campsite or just over an hour's walk, Chapman’s Pool offers some fantastic scenery and is definitely worth the visit.

Dancing Ledge on the Jurassic Coast near Swanage

Dancing Ledge Camping on the Jurassic Coast near Swanage

Dancing Ledge is a popular spot on the Jurassic Coast with locals and tourists alike. Located near Langton Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck, two and a half miles southwest of Swanage, it is found at the base of a small cliff. Its name comes from the result of the tide washing over the flat area of rock in a way that the ledge appears to be dancing. It can be a little difficult to reach however the lovely surroundings definitely make the climb down worthwhile. On warm days there’s even a small swimming pool, created for school kids near the beginning of the twentieth century, to help you cool down. It's just a 30 minute walk from our campsite.

Square and Compass, Worth Matravers on the Jurassic Coast, Dorset

Camping near The Square and Compass Pub, Worth Matravers on the Jurassic Coast, Dorset

The Square and Compass in Worth Matravers is a small yet charming public house that dates back to the eighteenth century. Now a Grade II listed building, it was originally constructed as a pair of cottages before later being converted into a public house. It has a rich history, having been owned by the same family since 1907, and features a museum which contains fossils and local artefacts. It is unusual for a pub, in that it doesn’t have a traditional bar - drinks are instead served through serving hatches that date back to the pub opening. A truly fascinating place to grab a refreshing ale or award winning cider while passing through the village. This quaint pub is just a 30 minute stroll or 5 minute car journey away from our campsite.
